The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (August 2) investigating a case of Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection with encephalitis complication involving a girl aged 17, and urges the public to be vigilant against the disease.
The patient, with good past health, presented with fever, oral ulcers as well as rash on hands and feet since July 29. She was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital on July 30 and developed severe headache after admission. She has been in stable condition all along.
Her clinical diagnosis was encephalitis. Her throat swab tested positive for EV71 by the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch of the CHP. Her home contacts remain asymptomatic.
CHP's investigation is continuing.
A CHP spokesman said that as the infection is transmitted by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, the public should be vigilant against the disease and observe the following preventive measures:
Children suffering from the infection should stay at home and avoid contact with other children until they have recovered.
