The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (June 11) investigating an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) at a nursery school in Yuen Long, and appealed to the public to maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene to prevent HFMD.
The affected 20 pupils, 14 boys and six girls aged between 2 and 6, have developed oral ulcers, fever and rash or vesicles on their hands or feet since May 24.
All affected pupils sought medical consultation and one of them was hospitalised and subsequently discharged. They are all currently in stable condition.
The stool samples of two of the affected pupils tested positive for enterovirus (EV).
Officers of the CHP have conducted a site visit and provided health advice to the staff. The school has been put under medical surveillance.
HFMD is a common disease in children and is usually caused by enteroviruses such as Coxsackie viruses and EV71.
To prevent HFMD, members of the public, and especially the management of institutions, should take heed of the following preventive measures:
The public may visit the CHP's website ( www.chp.gov.hk/en/view_content/16354.html ) for more information on HFMD and EV71 infection.
