Smoker convicted for assaulting tobacco control inspector

5 Jul 2011

A 62-year-old man was convicted by the Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts today (July 5) for assaulting a Tobacco Control Inspector (TCI). He was sentenced to four-week imprisonment and also fined $500 each for smoking offence, failing to produce ID card and dumping litter in public place respectively.

The incident took place in Diamond Hill Station Public Transport Interchange in Wong Tai Sin on February 12, 2011. The man assaulted a TCI when the TCI was requiring the man to produce his ID card for issuing a fixed penalty notice on smoking offence. The man fled the scene, but was subsequently arrested and charged by the Police.

A spokesman for the Department of Health urged the public to observe smoking ban requirements and to cooperate with law enforcement officers.

"Intimidation or use of violence on enforcement officers is a serious offence and carries serious legal consequences," the spokesman said.
