CHP investigates case of Legionnaires' Disease

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating a confirmed case of Legionnaires' Disease involving a 65-year-old man who had underlying medical illness. He lived in Kwun Tong.

The patient presented with cough and chills since January 24. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of United Christian Hospital on January 31 and was admitted on the same day. He was in stable condition and had been discharged.

Urine tests revealed that the patient was infected with Legionella bacteria.

His home contacts are asymptomatic. Investigation is on-going.

This is the second case of Legionnaires' Disease reported to CHP this year. Twenty cases were filed in 2010, another 37 in 2009, 13 in 2008 and 11 in 2007.
