3 Mar 2008

In response to media enquiries on a case involving a three-year-old boy admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital yesterday for diahorrea, fever and upper respiratory tract symptoms, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) and the Hospital Authority said today (March 3) it was not a suspected case of avian influenza.

The clinical picture of the boy was compatible with acute gastroenteritis and chest x-ray was normal.

The boy had earlier stayed in Fujian. No human or poultry outbreak of avian influenza has been reported in Fujian for more than six months.

The boy sought medical treatment from a private hospital in Sha Tin yesterday morning and was transferred to Prince of Wales of Hospital on the same day. He is now in stable condition.
