Press Release

An outbreak of influenza-like illness in a children's residential centre

22 Feb 2008

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (February 22) investigating an outbreak of influenza-like illness affecting 23 children and two staff members of a children's residential centre in Mong Kok.

A spokesman for the CHP called on members of the public and management of institutions to take preventive measures against the disease by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.

CHP's investigation revealed that the affected children, comprising eight boys and 15 girls, aged from one to three, developed influenza-like illness, including fever, cough, sore throat and runny nose since February 16.

Thirteen of them consulted general practitioners or out-patient clinics. One other sought treatment from the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital while one was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital. All of them are in stable condition.

CHP officials have conducted field visits to the centre and provided health instructions to the staff.

To prevent influenza and respiratory tract infection, the public are advised to adopt the following measures:

* To build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
* To maintain good personal hygiene, and wash hands after sneezing, coughing and wear a mask when developing symptoms of respiratory infections;
* To maintain good ventilation; and
* To avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation, especially during peak influenza season.

Members of the public, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.

For more information on the disease, members of the public may visit the CHP's website ( http://www.chp.gov.hk ).
