The Department of Health (DH) today (September 25) reminded members of the public, particularly children, to prevent scald injuries during the Mid Autumn Festival.
A spokesman for DH said: "Beware of fire sources and most importantly, do not 'boil wax'."
"Scald injuries can affect the appearance of a person by leaving life-long scars. In severe cases, they can lead to contracture (joint deformities) and difficulty in mobility."
"The damage can be permanent and treatment cannot restore the original appearance of the skin."
Parents are advised to remind their children not to "boil wax" and play with fire. Lighters, matches, cigarettes, candles and any inflammable products should be kept out of reach of the children. It is important that adults set good examples for children.
For more health advice on preventing scald injuries during the festive season, members of the public may call DH's Central Health Education Unit 24-hour Hotline (2833 0111) or visit the Department's website at http://www.info.gov.hk/healthzone.
To act as a constant reminder, the Department has produced a poster on preventing scald injuries. Copies are displayed at DH's clinics and centres, public housing estates and public places under the management of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department throughout Hong Kong.
