The Department of Health confirmed today (September 18) an imported cholera case in Hong Kong.
This brings to 13 the total number of imported cholera cases reported so far this (2001) year.
The number of confirmed local cases remains at 21. In addition, two confirmed cases are unclassified.
Today's case involved a 38-year-old man who developed diarrhoea on September 10. He was outside Hong Kong during the incubation period. He is in stable condition in Princess Margaret Hospital.
A spokesman for DH reminded the public that cholera is endemic in Hong Kong and neighbouring countries. "The best way to prevent contracting cholera is to observe good food, personal and environmental hygiene at all times," he said.
