The Department of Health announced today (September 12) that there were two confirmed imported cholera cases in Hong Kong.
This brings to 10 the total number of imported cholera cases reported so far this (2001) year.
The number of confirmed local cases remains at 21. In addition, another confirmed case is unclassified.
The two imported cases involved two female patients aged 16 and 66. They were part of a 31-member tour group to Southeast Asia between August 30 and September 2 this year. They are in Princess Margaret Hospital in stable condition.
A spokesman for DH reminded the public that cholera is endemic in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. "The best way to prevent contracting cholera is to observe good food, personal and environmental hygiene at all times," he said.
