The Department of Health (DH) advised members of the public, particularly those engaged in outdoor activities, to take measures to prevent heat stroke in view of the hot weather in Hong Kong.
The Acting Assistant Director of Health (Personal Health Service), Dr Au Tak-kwong today (August 23) said: "People should ensure they drink enough water. If you are engaged in outdoor activities, make sure you replace the water lost from sweating and don't drink only when you feel thirsty."
"You should avoid drinks containing caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar."
"You should also avoid very cold beverages because they can cause stomach cramps."
Particular attention should be paid to people who are at greatest risk of heat-related illness -- children and elderly persons, over-weight persons and persons who are ill.
Patients on certain medications may also be more susceptible. They should consult their doctors for advice.
Other preventive measures to be taken during very hot weather include:
Dr Au said that any person who does not feel well in the heat should seek medical attention immediately.
