Press Release

Cholera case confirmed

August 3, 2001

The Department of Health today (August 3) announced that the 38-year-old man who was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital on Wednesday (August 1), had been confirmed to have contracted cholera.

The patient had not travelled outside Hong Kong during the incubation period and the case was classified as a local one.

Members of the public are reminded that the best way to prevent cholera and other food-borne diseases is to observe good food, personal and environmental hygiene, and to clean and cook food, especially seafood thoroughly before eating.

To date, 15 confirmed cholera cases were reported in Hong Kong this (2001) year. Of these, one was an imported case reported in May.
