Press Release
Advice on contact lens for correction of myopia
July 11, 2001
In response to the enquiry about a recent report of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on the eye damage in patients using contact lens for the correction of myopia (shortsightedness), the Department of Health gives the following advice:-
-
A technique using specially made contact lenses known as Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) may induce a temporary change in shape of cornea, thus changing the level of myopia for a short period of time.
-
There is no conclusive evidence that Ortho-K lenses could reverse the progression of myopia.
-
Consumers are advised to consult ophthalmologists or optometrists before use of contact lens products.
-
Users of contact lens should strictly follow the instructions of eye care professionals on the wearing, cleansing and disinfection of contact lenses.
-
In the case of eye discomfort, users of contact lenses are advised to take off their lenses immediately and seek professional advice.
The matter will be referred to the Optometrists Board for further deliberation.
