Cholera update

June 11, 2001

The Department of Health (DH) today (June 11) confirmed one local cholera case involving a 38-year-old woman living in Kwai Chung. She is in hospital in stable condition.

The woman suffered from diarrhoea and was transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital last Friday (June 8). She had not travelled outside Hong Kong during the incubation period.

All her family members were asymptomatic. Joint investigations with Food and Environmental Hygiene Department are continuing.

A spokesman for DH reminded members of the public the best way to prevent cholera is to observe good personal, food and environmental hygiene at all times.

To-date, seven confirmed cholera cases were reported in Hong Kong this (2001) year. Of these, six were local cases reported this month (June) and one was an imported case in May.
