Health advice on preventing heat stroke

June 3, 2000

The Department of Health (DH) today (June 3) reiterated that members of the public should drink plenty of water and avoid over exertion to prevent heat stroke in very hot weather.

A spokesman for DH said : "All people should ensure they drink enough water. If you are engaged in outdoor activities, be sure to replace the water lost from sweating and don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink water."

"You should avoid drinks containing caffeine, alcohol or large amount of sugar."

"You should also avoid very cold beverages because they can cause stomach cramps."

Particular attention should be paid to people who are at greatest risk of heat-related illness - children and elderly persons, over-weight persons and persons who are ill.

Patients on certain medications may also be more susceptible. They should consult their doctors for advice.

Other preventive measures to be taken during very hot weather:

  • Stay in cool and well-ventilated places, electric fans may be useful to increase comfort and to draw cool air into your home;
  • Avoid exercising vigorously during periods of hot weather;
  • If you must be out in the heat, try to plan your activities so that you are outdoors either before noon or in the evening;
  • Never stay in a closed, parked vehicle; and
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. When outdoors, a wide-brimmed hat will provide shade and keep the head cool.

The spokesman said that any person who suffers from heat exhaustion should seek medical attention immediately.
