January 25, 2000

The Department of Health (DH) today (Tuesday) reiterated that members of the public should take precautionary measures against the attack of cold weather.

A spokesman for the Department said that cold weather can trigger off complications of diseases especially among the elderly people, those with heart, respiratory or chronic diseases.

In view of possible cold weather in the next few days, the spokesman advised the public to take the following measures:

  • To take note of the weather forecast. Wearing appropriate warm clothing including scarf, gloves, and hat;
  • To take sufficient food with high calorie content, e.g. rice, noodle. Alcohol should be avoided;
  • To engage in physical activities to facilitate blood circulation and production of heat;
  • To stay in warm environment and avoid over-exposure in open space;
  • To seek medical attention where necessary;
  • To use Temporary Cold Shelters provided by the Home Affairs Department, if necessary.

For babies, it is important to keep them lightly clothed in order not to restrict their bodily movements. Parents should take the following measures when they put their babies to bed:

  • Babies should normally lie on their backs and pillows should not be used;
  • Their feet should rest at the foot of the cot, and their arms should stay outside light bedding which is tucked securely in at the bottom of the cot to reduce the risk of bedding slipping over their heads;
