CHP investigates case of Legionnaires' Disease

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (May 30) investigating a case of Legionnaires' Disease involving a 57-year-old man.

The patient, with chronic illness, presented with fever, chills, cough and shortness of breath since May 21. He was admitted to North District Hospital on May 26 for severe pneumonia. The patient was discharged against medical advice on May 28.

On the same day, he sought medical consultation at United Christian Hospital and was admitted. His condition is now stable.

A urine sample test has revealed that the patient was infected with Legionella bacteria.

The patient had no recent travel history. His home contacts were asymtopmatic. Investigation is in progress.

This is the ninth case of Legionnaires' Disease reported to the CHP this year. Seventeen cases were filed in 2011, 20 in 2010 and 37 in 2009.
