Updates on CHP's investigation into suspected kerato-conjunctivitis outbreak

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (May 21) provided an update on its investigation into a suspected outbreak of kerato-conjunctivitis among participants of a Rugby match in Singapore between April 21 and 22.

Latest investigation revealed that 11 more boys, aged nine to 16 from the same team, called Discovery Bay Pirates, developed symptoms compatible with kerato-conjunctivitis, such as itchy, painful and red eye with discharge since late April and had sought medical consultation.

The CHP also identified at least one player aged 10 and one family member aged five from another team, called DeA Tigers, developed similar symptoms since early May and had sought medical treatment.

All of the affected did not require hospitalisation. Their condition is stable.

It brought the cumulative number of affected boys so far to 31, aged five to 16.

A CHP spokesman said: “Kerato-conjunctivitis is characterised by red, painful, itchy, swollen eyes with discharge. It can be treated with appropriate anti-microbials.”

The CHP has set up a hotline, 2125 2363, operating from tomorrow during office hours for enquiries. The spokesman called on members of both teams who have participated in the Singaporean match to contact the Centre.

"Members of the public, especially those who have joined the Rugby match, should seek medical consultation if they have similar symptoms," he said.
