Activity Status of Doctors Covered Of the 12 982 doctors covered, 6 213 (47.9%) responded to the survey, while the remaining 6 769 (52.1%) did not respond. Among the respondents, 5 591 (90.0%) were active in the local medical profession whereas 622 (10.0%) reported to be inactive in the local medical profession. Among the 5 591 active doctors, 5 566 (99.6%) were practising in the local medical profession, 10 (0.2%) had not been available for work because of temporary sickness during the 30 days before the survey, nine (0.2%) (a) were not practising in the medical profession in Hong Kong during the survey period; (b) had been available for work during the seven days before the survey; and (c) had sought work in the medical profession during the 30 days before the survey and the remaining six (0.1%) believed that work was not available, were waiting to take up a new job or starting business at subsequent date in the local medical profession during the 30 days before the survey. Of the 622 inactive doctors, 180 (28.9%) reported practising overseas, 13 (2.1%) reported practising in the Mainland, 429 (69.0%) reported not practising in the medical profession in Hong Kong and not seeking job in the local medical profession during the 30 days before the survey. Of the 429 inactive doctors, 353 (82.3%) were retired, 23 (5.4%) wanted to take a rest / had no motive to work / had no financial need, 22 (5.1%) were working in other professions and 12 (2.8%) were engaged in household duties and the remaining 19 (4.4%)* had other reasons for being inactive.
