Table A(cont.): Selected Characteristics of Active Local Pharmacists Enumerated in Health Manpower Survey by Survey Year (1982 - 2024)

In the 2005 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 1 567 pharmacists covered and 809 active pharmacists were enumerated.  One pharmacist did not indicate the gender. Of the remaining 808 active pharmacists enumerated, 387 were male and 421 were female.  Their sex ratio was 92 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 38.6 and median age was 37.0.  Among the 809 active pharmacists enumerated, 34(4.2%) worked in the Government, 223(27.6%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 536(66.3%) worked in the private sector, 12(1.4%) worked in others and four(0.5%) did not reveal their sector of work.

In the 2006 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 1 622 pharmacists covered and 798 active pharmacists were enumerated.  Two pharmacists did not indicate the gender.  Of the remaining 796 active pharmacists enumerated, 388 were male and 408 were female.  Their sex ratio was 95 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 38.8 and median age was 37.0.  Among the 798 active pharmacists enumerated, 34(4.3%) worked in the Government, 228(28.6%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 526(65.9%) worked in the private sector, seven(0.9%) worked in others and three(0.4%) did not reveal their sector of work.

In the 2007 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 1 705 pharmacists covered and 831 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The number of male was 399 and the number of female was 432.  Their sex ratio was 92 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 39.2 and median age was 38.0.  Among the 831 active pharmacists enumerated, 35(4.2%) worked in the Government, 232(27.9%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 551(66.3%) worked in the private sector and 13(1.6%) worked in others.

In the 2009 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 1 859 pharmacists covered and 949 active pharmacists were enumerated.  Seven pharmacists did not indicate the gender.  Of the remaining 942 active pharmacists enumerated, 446 were male and 496 were female.  Their sex ratio was 90 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 40.3 and median age was 39.0.  Among the 949 active pharmacists enumerated, 55(5.8%) worked in the Government, 259(27.3%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 616(64.9%) worked in the private sector, 16(1.7%) worked in others and three(0.3%) did not reveal their sector of work.

In the 2012 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 2 105 pharmacists covered and 823 active pharmacists were enumerated.  Six pharmacists did not indicate the gender.  Of the remaining 817 active pharmacists enumerated, 386 were male and 431 were female.  Their sex ratio was 90 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 42.0 and median age was 41.0.  Among the 823 active pharmacists enumerated, 70(8.5%) worked in the Government, 230(27.9%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 503(61.1%) worked in the private sector and 20(2.4%) worked in others.

In the 2015 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 2 475 pharmacists covered and 817 active pharmacists were enumerated.  Five pharmacists did not indicate the gender.  Of the remaining 812 active pharmacists enumerated, 375 were male and 437 were female.  Their sex ratio was 86 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 42.0 and median age was 40.0.  Among the 817 active pharmacists enumerated, 70(8.6%) worked in the Government, 261(31.9%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 457(55.9%) worked in the private sector and 29(3.5%) worked in others.

In the 2018 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 2 851 pharmacists covered and 1 032 active pharmacists were enumerated.  Four pharmacists did not indicate the gender.  Of the remaining 1 028 active pharmacists enumerated, 485 were male and 543 were female.  Their sex ratio was 89 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 41.6 and median age was 39.0.  Among the 1 032 active pharmacists enumerated, 99(9.6%) worked in the Government, 316(30.6%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 580(56.2%) worked in the private sector and 37(3.6%) worked in others.

In the 2024 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 3 332 pharmacists covered and 1 086 active pharmacists were enumerated.  15 pharmacists did not indicate the gender.  Of the remaining 1 071 active pharmacists enumerated, 505 were male and 566 were female.  Their sex ratio was 89 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 43.9 and median age was 42.0.  Among the 1 086 active pharmacists enumerated, 103(9.5%) worked in the Government, 328(30.2%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 610(56.2%) worked in the private sector and 42(3.9%) worked in others and three(0.3%) did not reveal their sector of work.

1.  Figures of 2000 and before refer to the number of pharmacists registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong as at 1 July of the respective years, whereas the figures of 2004 to 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2018 refer to that as at 31 August of the respective years. Figures of 2024 refers to the number of pharmacists registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong as at 30 June 2024.
