Table A: Selected Characteristics of Active Local Pharmacists Enumerated in Health Manpower Survey by Survey Year (1982 - 2024)

In the 1982 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 409 pharmacists covered and 282 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The statistics on the number of males and female were not available.  Their sex ratio was 189 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 36.1 and statistics on their median age were not available.  Among the 282 active pharmacists enumerated, 73(25.9%) worked in the Government, 190(67.4%) worked in the private sector and 19(6.7%) in others.

In the 1984 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 475 pharmacists covered and 317 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The number of male was 211 and the number of female was 106.  Their sex ratio was 199 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 36.4 and statistics on their median age were not available.  Among the 317 active pharmacists enumerated, 78(24.6%) worked in the Government, 215(67.8%) worked in the private sector and 24(7.6%) worked in others.

In the 1987 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 607 pharmacists covered and 366 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The number of male was 234 and the number of female was 132.  Their sex ratio was 177 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 37.0 and statistics on their median age were not available.  Among the 366 active pharmacists enumerated, 88(24.0%) worked in the Government, 257(70.2%) worked in the private sector and 21(5.8%) worked in others.

In the 1990 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 707 pharmacists covered and 391 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The number of male was 237 and the number of female was 154.  Their sex ratio was 154 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 38.6 and statistics on their median age were not available.  Among the 391 active pharmacists enumerated, 81(20.7%) worked in the Government, 285(72.9%) worked in the private sector and 25(6.4%) worked in others.

In the 1992 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 734 pharmacists covered and 439 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The number of male was 259 and the number of female was 180.  Their sex ratio was 144 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 37.5 and statistics on their median age were not available.  Among the 439 active pharmacists enumerated, 30(6.8%) worked in the Government, 83(18.9%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 321(73.1%) worked in the private sector and five(1.1%) worked in others.

In the 1996 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 1 018 pharmacists covered and 610 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The number of male was 351 and the number of female was 259.  Their sex ratio was 136 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 37.1 and statistics on their median age were not available.  Among the 610 active pharmacists enumerated, 36(5.9%) worked in the Government, 179(29.3%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 384(63.0%) worked in the private sector and 11(1.8%) worked in others.

In the 2000 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 1 289 pharmacists covered and 758 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The number of male was 413 and the number of female was 345.  Their sex ratio was 120 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 37.3 and median age was 36.0.  Among the 758 active pharmacists enumerated, 46(6.1%) worked in the Government, 183(24.1%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 518(68.3%) worked in the private sector and 11(1.5%) worked in others.

In the 2004 Health Manpower Survey on Pharmacists, 1 512 pharmacists covered and 613 active pharmacists were enumerated.  The number of male was 299 and the number of female was 314.  Their sex ratio was 95 male active pharmacists enumerated per 100 female active pharmacists enumerated.  Their mean age was 38.6 and median age was 36.0.  Among the 613 active pharmacists enumerated, 28(4.6%) worked in the Government, 172(28.1) worked in the Hospital Authority, 403(65.7%) worked in the private sector, nine(1.5%) worked in others and one(0.2%) did not reveal their sector of work.

Figures of 2000 and before refer to the number of pharmacists registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong as at 1 July of the respective years, whereas the figures of 2004 to 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2018 refer to that as at 31 August of the respective years.  Figures of 2024 refers to the number of pharmacists registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong as at 30 June 2024.
