The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating a fatal case of Vibrio vulnificus infection involving an 84-year-old woman with chronic illnesses.

The woman developed fever on May 23, and symptoms of vomiting and decreased consciousness the next day. She was admitted to Ruttonjee Hospital on May 24. She was noted to have lower limb bruising and upper limb swelling. Her condition later deteriorated and passed away on May 26.

Her blood specimen taken during admission was cultured positive for Vibrio vulnificus.

The CHP's investigation revealed that the woman was injured while scraping fish on May 23. Her home contact was asymptomatic. Investigation continues.
