Among the 947 active dentists enumerated, 154(16.3%) worked in the Government, 733(77.4%) worked in the private sector and 60(6.3%) worked in others. In the 1996 Health Manpower Survey, 1 478 dentists covered and 977 active dentists were enumerated. 779 were male and 198 were female. Their sex ratio was 393 male active dentists enumerated per 100 female active dentists enumerated. Their mean age was 38.9. Among the 977 active dentists enumerated, 198(20.3%) worked in the Government, 744(76.2%) worked in the private sector and 35(3.6%) worked in others. In the 2000 Health Manpower Survey, 1 589 dentists covered and 1 152 active dentists were enumerated. 903 were male and 249 were female. Their sex ratio was 363 male active dentists enumerated per 100 female active dentists enumerated. Their mean age was 40.3. Among the 1 152 active dentists enumerated, 220(19.1%) worked in the Government, 872(75.7%) worked in the private sector and 60(5.2%) worked in others. In the 2003 Health Manpower Survey, 1 671 dentists covered and 1 026 active dentists were enumerated. 756 were male, 264 were female and 6 did not reveal their sex. Their sex ratio was 286 male active dentists enumerated per 100 female active dentists enumerated. Their mean age was 41.1. Among the 1 026 active dentists enumerated, 172(16.8%) worked in the Government, 734(71.5%) worked in the private sector, 80(7.8%) worked in others and 40(3.9%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2004 Health Manpower Survey, 1 714 dentists covered and 916 active dentists were enumerated. 657 were male and 259 were female. Their sex ratio was 254 male active dentists enumerated per 100 female active dentists enumerated. Their mean age was 40.6. Among the 916 active dentists enumerated, 176(19.2%) worked in the Government, 666(72.7%) worked in the private sector, 73(8.0%) worked in others and 1(0.1%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2005 Health Manpower Survey, 1 753 dentists covered and 1 111 active dentists were enumerated. 800 were male and 311 were female. Their sex ratio was 257 male active dentists enumerated per 100 female active dentists enumerated. Their mean age was 41.7. Among the 1 111 active dentists enumerated, 201(18.1%) worked in the Government, 825(74.3%) worked in the private sector, 79(7.1%) worked in others and 6(0.5%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2006 Health Manpower Survey, 1 794 dentists covered and 1 031 active dentists were enumerated. 756 were male and 275 were female. Their sex ratio was 275 male active dentists enumerated per 100 female active dentists enumerated. Their mean age was 42.4. Among the 1 031 active dentists enumerated, 134(13.0%) worked in the Government, 801(77.7%) worked in the private sector, 77(7.5%) worked in others and 19(1.8%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2007 Health Manpower Survey, 1 838 dentists covered and 1 081 active dentists were enumerated. 787 were male and 294 were female. Their sex ratio was 268 male active dentists enumerated per 100 female active dentists enumerated. Their mean age was 43.0. Among the 1 081 active dentists enumerated, 190(17.6%) worked in the Government, 794(73.5%) worked in the private sector, 94(8.7%) worked in others and 3(0.3%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2009 Health Manpower Survey, 1 938 dentists covered and 1 232 active dentists were enumerated. 26 did not reveal their sex. Of the remaining 1 206 active dentists, 874 were male and 332 were female. Their sex ratio was 263 male active dentists enumerated per 100 female active dentists enumerated. Their mean age was 45.1. Among the 1 232 active dentists enumerated, 211(17.1%) worked in the Government, 930(75.5%) worked in the private sector, 86(7.0%) worked in others and 5(0.4%) did not reveal their sector of work. Figures of 2000 and before refer to the number of dentists registered with the Dental Council of Hong Kong on the list of the registered dentists resident in Hong Kong as at the 1st of July of the respective years, the figure of 2003 refers to that as at the 31st of December 2003, whereas the figures of 2004 to 2007 and 2009 refer to that as at 31st of August of the respective years. 2.
