Caring Oral Health Months cum Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing Activity Day held today

15 May 2016

The Department of Health (DH) today (May 15) held the Caring Oral Health Months cum Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing Activity Day in a Housing Authority (HA) shopping centre in Yau Tong to promote the oral health of the elderly. The theme for the activity day is "Love your parents, Care for their oral health".

The DH holds the annual Love Teeth Campaign to promote good oral self-care and appropriate use of professional oral care among the public. Since 2015, the department has designated May and June as the Caring Oral Health Months to arouse community concern towards the oral health of the senior members in the family. In collaboration with the HA and the Hong Kong Dental Association (HKDA), the DH launched a pilot oral health programme for the elderly this year by incorporating an oral health element into the existing Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing programme regularly run by the HA.

Today's Activity Day launches a series of promotional activities and talks under the pilot programme, to be held in the community halls of different estates from September 2016 to March 2017.

"We should take action to care for the oral health of our parents, and help them to enhance their oral health care knowledge and skills. Our parents should go to the dentist for a check-up every year as the latter can provide them with appropriate and professional dental care. Good oral health is crucial to overall health. Healthy teeth can help our parents enjoy delicious and nutritious food, which can give them a healthy body," the Consultant-in-Charge, Dental Service of the DH, Dr Joseph Chan said at the launch ceremony.

The public can visit the website of the DH's Oral Health Education Unit for more information on oral health (This link will open in a new windowwww.toothclub.gov.hk/en/en_index.html).
