CHP investigates outbreak of upper respiratory tract infection at primary school

2 February 2016

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (February 2) investigating an outbreak of upper respiratory tract infection (URI) at a primary school in Yuen Long, and appealed to members of the public to stay alert and maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene.

The outbreak involves 18 boys and nine girls aged 6 to 12, who have developed URI symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat since January 28. Among them, 22 affected students sought medical advice and none of them required hospitalisation. They are currently in stable condition.

Officers of the CHP inspected the school and provided preventive advice against URI. The school has been placed under medical surveillance.

The public should maintain good personal and environmental hygiene against influenza and other respiratory illnesses:

Members of the public, particularly children, the elderly and those with chronic diseases, should wear a face mask and consult a doctor promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.

The public can visit the CHP website (This link will open in a new windowwww.chp.gov.hk) for more information on URI.
