Case of severe paediatric influenza A infection under CHP investigation

28 January 2015

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (January 28) investigating a case of severe paediatric influenza A infection affecting a 3-year-old girl.

The patient, with underlying illnesses, has presented with fever, cough, runny nose and convulsion since January 26. She was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday (January 27) and was subsequently transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for further management. The clinical diagnosis is pneumonia and shock. She is currently in serious condition.

Her nasopharyngeal swab tested positive for influenza A virus upon laboratory testing by QEH.

Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the patient had no travel history during the incubation period. Her home contacts remained asymptomatic.

Investigation is ongoing.

The public should maintain good personal and environmental hygiene against influenza and other respiratory illnesses:
