Case of Legionnaires' disease under CHP investigation

24 July 2014

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 24) investigating a case of Legionnaires' disease (LD) affecting a man aged 62.

The patient, with underlying illnesses, has presented with fever, headache, cough with sputum and shortness of breath since July 7 and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 8 for management. His clinical diagnosis was pneumonia. He was discharged on July 15 in stable condition.

His serum sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antibody today upon laboratory testing by the CHP's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch.

Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the patient had no recent travel history. His home contacts have remained asymptomatic so far. Investigations are proceeding.

This is the 25th LD case reported to the CHP this year. In 2013 and 2012, 28 cases were filed in each year.

The public may visit the CHP's LD page (This link will open in a new windowwww.chp.gov.hk/en/content/9/24/2117.html) for further information and corresponding preventive advice.
