Case of Legionnaires' disease under CHP investigation

15 July 2014

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 15) investigating a case of Legionnaires' disease (LD) affecting a man aged 76.

The patient, with underlying illnesses, developed a cough with blood-stained sputum and diarrhoea since June 15. He sought medical consultation from two general outpatient clinics on July 8 and 9 respectively, and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Ruttonjee Hospital on July 12 where he was admitted for treatment on the same day. His clinical diagnosis was pneumonia. He is currently in a stable condition.

His urine sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophilia serogroup 1 antigen upon laboratory testing at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.

Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the patient has no recent travel history. His home contact is asymptomatic so far. Investigations are proceeding.

This is the 23rd LD case reported to the CHP this year. In 2013 and 2012, 28 cases were filed in each year.

The public may visit the CHP's LD page (This link will open in a new windowwww.chp.gov.hk/en/content/9/24/2117.html) for further information and corresponding preventive advice.
