Press Release

Suspected case of Phytolacca americana poisoning under CHP investigation

11 April 2014

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (April 11) investigating a suspected case of Phytolacca americana poisoning affecting a woman aged 40, and hence reminded members of the public not to consume the toxic Phytolacca americana.

The patient, who lives in Yuen Long, developed vomiting about two hours after drinking hot water with fresh root of suspected Phytolacca americana at home on March 30. She then sought medical attention at the Accident and Emergency Department of Pok Oi Hospital where she was admitted on the same day. She was discharged on April 1.

Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the suspected Phytolacca americana involved was a plant grown by the patient. She mistook it as Ginseng. The alleged plant was subsequently identified as Phytolacca americana and health advice has been given to the patient. Investigations are proceeding.

"The fresh root of Phytolacca americana looks similar to that of Ginseng. Consuming fresh root of Phytolacca americana can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. It is not recommended for human consumption," a spokesman for the CHP explained.

"The public should avoid picking or consuming Phytolacca americana in order to prevent poisoning. If symptoms of poisoning develop, they should immediately consult medical professionals for advice and prompt treatment," the spokesman urged.
