Nutrition information for pregnant women and lactating mothers (including iodine requirement)

Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (13 July) released the report of a risk assessment study entitled Iodine Intake in Hong Kong Adults , and people in Hong Kong are recommended to eat a variety of iodine-rich foods as part of a healthy balanced diet to ensure sufficient iodine intake.

Before women get pregnant, they should eat well by consuming a balanced diet of a variety of food and food rich in folic acid and iodine. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, body needs additional folic acid, iron, iodine, and calcium for baby to grow and develop. More calories are required from the second trimester onwards, and a bit more during breastfeeding. However, they do not need to eat too much to meet the extra needs. A balanced diet consisting of a variety of foods and choosing foods that are rich in folic acid, iron, iodine and calcium are basis for good nutrition for pregnant women and babies.
