Woman convicted for assaulting tobacco control inspector

A 46-year-old woman was convicted by the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court today (December 8) for assaulting a Tobacco Control Inspector (TCI).

The woman was sentenced to one month imprisonment suspended for 12 months and fined $2000 for assaulting a TCI.

The incident took place in a restaurant premises, namely “美德茶餐廳” in Wai Yip Street, Kwun Tong on August 17, 2010. The woman assaulted a TCI when a team of inspectors was inspecting the restaurant premises. The woman was subsequently arrested and charged with assault by the Police.

A spokesman for the Department of Health urged the public to observe the smoking ban requirements and to co-operate with law-enforcement officers.

"Intimidation of or use of violence on enforcement officers is a serious offence and carries serious legal consequences," he said.
