Public advised to take precautionary health measure
in Russia

Department of Health (DH) reminds members of public to stay vigilant
about the latest wildfires situation in Russia and take precautionary
health measures when planning to travel to Russia or staying in
Russia.
According to the latest public health advice issued by the Regional
Office for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO) on 10 August
2010 (www.euro.who.int/__data/assets/pdf_file/0011/119684/RUS_wildfires.pdf),
people in Moscow may be affected by the health impact of heat and
high concentration of air pollutants. Certain groups of people,
including those with asthma, respiratory diseases and cardiovascular
diseases, elderly people, children, pregnant women and smokers,
are at higher risk than others.
WHO advised people in Moscow or areas affected by wildfires and
heat-wave in Russia to take the following precautionary measures:
* Remain indoors;
* Keep the home cool or stay in air-conditioned spaces;
* Avoid increased physical activities and strenuous exercise;
* Keep the body cool and hydrated; and
* If present with respiratory problems, consult doctor as soon as
possible.
DH is in active liaison with its Russian counterpart and also networking
with international and regional authorities to monitor the situation
for best risk assessment and management.
Meanwhile, travellers to Moscow and affected areas in Russia are
advised to take the following precautions:
Before departure
* Monitor the latest development of situation in affected areas;
* Check for visibility and air quality reports; and
* Patients with heart and lung problems may want to consult their
attending physicians and should in any case carry sufficient medications.
While in affected areas
* Wear appropriate clothing and drink more non-alcoholic drinks
to avoid heat-related illnesses;
* Avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors. People with heart
or lung diseases, the elderly and children are advised to remain
indoor, preferably in air-conditioned spaces and keep activity levels
low; and
* Seek medical advice if feeling unwell.
