Health talks on Hand-Foot-Mouth Diseases and Enterovirus 71

The first of four health talks on "Prevention and Control of Hand-Foot-Mouth Diseases (HFMD) and Enterovirus 71 (EV71)" organised by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health in collaboration with the Education Bureau and Social Welfare Department was held today (April 22) to equip school teachers and staff with more knowledge on prevention and control of the diseases.

The talk, held at Aldrich Bay Government Primary School, was attended some 60 teachers and staff of various child care centres (CCC), kindergartens (KG) and schools.

The four identical health talks will update school staff on HFMD and EV71 infection and help participants familiarise with measures to prevent and control infectious diseases and manage outbreaks in schools.

Participants learned that HFMD was a viral infection commonly seen in children. Outbreaks often occur in child care centres, kindergartens and schools. The infection can occur throughout the year but is more commonly found in the summer.

Attention was drawn to the recent increase in activities HFMD and EV71 infection detected in Hong Kong and neighbouring areas.

Participants were reminded to strictly observe personal and environmental hygiene to prevent HFMD and EV71 infection.

Principals and/or representatives of CCCs, KGs and schools are welcome to join the remaining three health talks which will be held on April 23, 26 and 27 respectively (see Annex ).
