Birth in wash room investigated

17 Apr 2010

In response to media enquiry, a spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) said the department was investigating the birth of a baby girl on April 15, 2010 in the wash room of the Maternity Ward of Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital.

"The mother is a 23-year-old Mainland resident. At 39 weeks' gestation, she was admitted to the hospital on April 14 night for induction of labour. In the early morning of April 15, the mother rang the call bell while in the wash room at about 6 am. With the assistance of midwives, the woman delivered a baby girl in the wash room before arrival of her attending doctor.

"Both the mother and the baby girl are in stable condition, with the former discharged from hospital yesterday and the latter to be discharged later," the spokesman said.

DH was alerted yesterday evening by the hospital and investigation immediately started. The department noted that one registered nurse and two midwives were on duty when the incident happened.

Investigations continue.
