21 Sep 2009

A spokesman for the Department of Health said there had been 446 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) (HSI) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (September 21). One of the cases was from an elderly home in Sheung Shui.

The new cases involve 255 males and 191 females, aged between 28 days and 86 years.

This brings to 22,500 the total number of HSI cases in Hong Kong.

The spokesman noted that the total number of HSI cases would be revised according to further laboratory results.

The case in the elderly home involved an 86-year-old man. He was admitted to North District Hospital on September 19. His current condition is stable.

A respiratory specimen taken was tested positive for HSI.

"There is no influenza-like illness outbreak in the elderly home and health advice was given to the staff.

"The department will put the staff and residents of the institution under medical surveillance," he said.
