Eleven schools are advised to suspend classes

The Department of Health today (September 21) advised eight primary schools and three secondary schools to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (HSI) in the schools.

The advice was made following the outbreaks of HSI in the schools involving 824 students aged between six and 17 (annex), a spokesman for the department said.

Primary schools involved are Ma Tau Chung Government Primary School (Hung Hom Bay) and SHK Fung Kei Millennium Primary School in Hung Hom, Ying Wah Primary School in Sham Shui Po, Alliance Primary School, Sheung Shui, Christian Alliance H C Chan Primary School and CUHKFAA Thomas Cheung School in Sha Tin, CCC Heep Who Primary School (PM session) in Yau Ma Tei and Ho Shun Primary School in Tsuen Wan.

Secondary schools involved are Chinese International School (Secondary School) in North Point, Maryknoll Fathers’ School in Sham Shui Po and Ho Yu College in Tung Chung.

A total of seven students required hospitalization. All of the affected students are in stable condition.

So far, laboratory results showed that specimens of 30 students were tested positive to HSI.

The department had visited the schools and advised the staff on infection control measures. The schools are put under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
