Primary school advised to suspend classes

16 Sep 2009

The Department of Health today (September 16) advised a primary school in North Point to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (HSI).

The advice was made following the outbreak of influenza-like illness in Chinese International School (Primary School) involving 55 students aged between five and 11, a spokesman for the department said.

Investigation revealed that 32 boys and 23 girls of the school developed influenza-like illness symptoms since September 3. One was hospitalized. All affected students were in stable condition.

Laboratory result showed that a 10-year-old boy was confirmed to have infected with HSI. He had recovered.

The department had visited the school and advised staff to reinforce infection control measures. The school is put under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
