CHP is investigating an influenza A outbreak in an elderly home

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (August 27) urged members of the public and management of institutions to take preventive measures against Influenza by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.

The appeal was made following the CHP's investigation into a report of a confirmed influenza A outbreak in an elderly home in Kwun Tong, affecting 22 residents.

CHP's investigations revealed that eight males and 14 females aged from 64 to 99, developed fever, cough runny nose and sore throat since August 12.Eight of them required hospital admission. Of those admitted, one resident was in serious condition while others were in stable condition.

Nasal pharyngeal aspirates taken from 10 residents were tested positive to influenza A but negative to Human Swine Influenza.

CHP staff have visited and provided health advice to the staff of the elderly home. Tamiflu has been given to the staff and close contacts of the patients as chemoprophylaxis.

The institution is put under medical surveillance.
