13 Aug 2009

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) said there had been 207 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (HSI) (Influenza A H1N1) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (August 13). One of the cases was from an elderly home in Yuen Long.

The new cases involve 100 males and 107 females, aged between six months and 78 years.

This brings to 6,417 the total number of human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

The case in the elderly home involved a 47-year-old man with underlying chronic illness. He developed fever and cough on August 10 and was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital on August 12. His current condition is stable.

A respiratory specimen taken from him by the hospital was tested positive for HSI.

DH staff have visited the institution and provided health advice, the spokesman said.

"There is no influenza-like illness outbreak in the institution and Tamiflu has been given to the staff and close contacts of the patient as antiviral chemoprophylaxis.

"The department will keep the staff and residents of the elderly home under medical surveillance," he said.
