27 Jul 2009

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) today (July 27) advised Shatin Pui Ying College to suspend a summer class for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine (Influenza A H1N1) in the summer class.

The advice was made following the notification of 12 students, involving nine boys and three girls aged between 13 and 14 attending a summer class of the school, developed influenza like illness symptoms since July 13.

One of the affected students, a 13-year-old boy, developed fever, cough and headache on July 24. He was admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital this afternoon.

Another five students were confirmed to have infected with human swine influenza.

All 12 students are now in stable condition.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.

The department provided health advice to the school and put the students of the summer class concerned under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
