Books on health maintenance on sale (with photo)

The Elderly Health Service of the Department of Health has published a new Chinese book entitled "Invest for Your Health".

Written in plain language, the book discusses the proper concept of health maintenance and provides practical tips on prevention and management of common chronic diseases.

The book is now available for sale at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2009 starting today (July 22) and later in local Chinese bookstores.

The Assistant Director of Health (Family and Elderly Health Services), Dr W M Chan, said that there are still many myths about chronic disease prevention. This book explains how healthy lifestyles can help to prevent chronic diseases, and discusses the proper approach to health check up which is now becoming popular.

"Whether you are healthy or already suffering from chronic diseases, it is important for you to acquire more knowledge and skills in maintaining health, so that you can continue to enjoy quality of life as you age." Dr Chan said.

The book has two volumes with the theme of health maintenance and prevention and management of chronic diseases respectively.

Topics covered in Volume One include: choose health checkup wisely, diet and health, the importance of exercise to health, how to give up smoking, sensible drinking, coping with stress, body weight control, and tips on oral health.

Volume Two introduces the four common killers in Hong Kong, namely cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke and chronic obstructive airway disease , and four common conditions which can significant affect the quality of life: fall, depression, joint pain and memory deficit .

Volume One is on sale at $75 and Volume Two at $70. A 20% discount will be offered to holders of Senior Citizen Card at the Cosmos Stall and Bookshops.
