A spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (July 15) said CHP was investigating an outbreak of upper respiratory tract infection in a residential workshop for the physically and mentally disabled in Eastern District.

As of today, five workshop attendees, four residents and seven staff members, comprising eight men and eight women aged from 22 to 47, developed symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection, including fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat since July 11.

Among them, a 22-year-old male patient was confirmed to have infected with human swine influenza. He was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital for further management. He is in stable condition.

Nine of the other affected persons sought medical attention. None of them required hospitalization.

CHP officials conducted field visits to the institution and provided health advice to the staff and residents.

All symptomatic residents and staff members were advised to seek medical attention, the spokesman said.
