Press Release

Fifty-seven new cases of human swine influenza

9 Jul 2009

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) said there had been 57 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (July 9).

The new cases involve 33 males and 24 females, aged between five months and 57 years.

This brings to 1,112 the total number of human swine influenza cases (HSI) in Hong Kong.

The Department of Health has so far advised 43 secondary schools with confirmed HSI cases to suspend classes or start their summer break in order to stop the possible spread of the disease in the schools.

Among the schools is Shatin Tsung Tsin Secondary School which will start its summer break tomorrow.

Three Form 4 students, two 15-year-old girls and a 16-year-old boy in the same class, have been confirmed to be infected with HSI. None of them required hospitalisation.

These three students are among the 1,112 confirmed HSI cases.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
