19 Jun 2009

The Department of Health (DH) today (June 19) advised three other secondary schools in Ma On Shan, Tung Chung and Tai Po to suspend classes for two weeks starting tomorrow (June 20) to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) in the schools.

The advice was made following the confirmation of three human swine influenza cases in the schools, a DH spokesman said.

The first case involved a 15-year-old girl, a Grade 10 student of Renaissance College in Ma On Shan.

The girl developed symptoms on June 15 and was admitted to hospital for isolation. She is now in stable condition.

The second case involved a 13-year-old girl, a Form Two student studying at YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College in Tung Chung.

She had onset of symptoms on June 17 and was admitted to hospital. She is now in stable condition.

The spokesman said that both students had attended a function held by a private arts centre on June 14.

The Department has advised the centre to suspend classes for two weeks starting tomorrow and carry out thorough disinfection.

The third case involved a 38-year-old teacher of Ling Liang Church M H Lau Secondary School in Tai Po.

He had onset of symptoms on June 14 and would be admitted to hospital for isolation tonight.

Investigation into the cases is ongoing.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
