18 Jun 2009

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) today (June 18) said the department was investigating 49 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1).

Six of them are imported while 28 are local. Classification of the other 15 cases is still pending.

This brings to 221 the total number of human swine influenza (HSI) cases in Hong Kong.

The new cases involved 22 female and 27 male aged between one and 55. All of them are in stable condition and have been admitted to public hospitals for medical treatment.

Among them are three boys and two girls, aged between 13 and 15, from five secondary schools which have been advised to suspend classes for two weeks starting tomorrow (June 19) to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1).

The affected schools are GT (Ellen Yeung) College in Tseung Kwan O, American International School in Kowloon Tong, TWGHs Li Ka Shing College in Fanling, King George V School in Homantin and South Island School in Wong Chuk Hang.

The five students had onset of symptoms including fever, cough and headache since June 13 and admitted to public hospitals for isolation. They are now in stable condition.

Respiratory specimens taken from these students were tested positive to swine influenza today.

Investigations into the cases are ongoing.
