Press Release

License needed for contract out drug production

9 Mar 2009

In response to media enquiries on the production of pharmaceutical products by local drug companies, a spokesman for the Department of Health today (March 9) said local drug manufacturers who had Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)-standard for packaging were only licensed to do packaging in Hong Kong.

These manufacturers were permitted to contract out the manufacturing of their pharmaceutical products to other local licensed manufacturers or GMP manufacturers outside Hong Kong.

The spokesman said the pharmaceutical products made outside Hong Kong must meet the GMP requirements imposed by their licensing authorities and the relevant documents should be produced to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board’s Registration Committee for examination before getting approval for local marketing.
